Energetic Effects of Whale-Watching Boats on Humpback Whales on a Breeding Ground

چکیده

Interactions between whale-watching boats and cetaceans can lead to changes in their behavior. From a management perspective, it is important understand how this type of disturbance be translated into physiological effects, such as energetic metabolism. Humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) typically do not feed while breeding grounds, thus they depend on finite energy reserves. The effect the metabolism humpback whales, ground northern Peru (4°10′35″S, 81°08′03″W) was evaluated. Groups were tracked from land, under following scenarios: with, without, before-during-after presence boats. Mass-specific cost transport (COT) used proxy efficiency calculated swimming speed breath frequency estimations. No differences detected frequency, speed, COT when comparing with without However, boats, swim increased, decreased number increased. Exponential increment breathing at higher detected. absence speeds beyond assumed optimal range suggested no shifts metabolic inefficiency. Our results suggest 2 4.05 m/s, representing values 0.020 0.041 J × (kg m) –1 . In light our results, we encourage implementation regulations activity, particularly limiting interacting same group whales.

Behavioural responses of killer whales (Orcinus orca) to whale-watching boats: opportunistic observations and experimental approaches

Johnstone Strait provides important summer habitat for the northern resident killer whales Orcinus orca of British Columbia. The site is also an active whale-watching area. A voluntary code of conduct requests that boats do not approach whales closer than 100 m to address perceived, rather than demonstrated, effects of boat traf®c on killer whales. The purpose of the study was to test the relev...

Influence of environmental parameters on movements and habitat utilization of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Madagascar breeding ground

Assessing the movement patterns and key habitat features of breeding humpback whales is a prerequisite for the conservation management of this philopatric species. To investigate the interactions between humpback whale movements and environmental conditions off Madagascar, we deployed 25 satellite tags in the northeast and southwest coast of Madagascar. For each recorded position, we collated e...

Passive Acoustic Tracking of Singing Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on a Northwest Atlantic Feeding Ground

Passive acoustic tracking provides an unobtrusive method of studying the movement of sound-producing animals in the marine environment where traditional tracking methods may be costly or infeasible. We used passive acoustic tracking to characterize the fine-scale movements of singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) on a northwest Atlantic feeding ground. Male humpback whales produce co...
